Free Anti-virus solution

I’ve recently come across Microsoft Security Essentials, which is a free product (for home use) that Microsoft offers people with a valid copy of Windows XP, Vista or 7. This guards against viruses, malware and other malicious software that we’ve all come in contact with all too often. I’ve used many of the pay and free products out there, some of which seem to bog down my computers, but from what I’ve heard and tested on this product, it seems to deliver without affecting performance. One of the main things you want in a program like this, is real-time protection, which this offers.

As always, I’m open to debate on products like these, so you guys try this out and let me know what you think.

Looking for a way to monitor/protect your children online? I just setup ‘Family Safety‘ via Microsoft Windows Live. It’s a quick and easy install on each computer, and it has a lot of flexibility on what content you allow them to see when online. It’s free, and all you need is a Windows Live (or Hotmail) account.

A tool to make the move easier!

HINT: If anyone is looking to upgrade to Windows 7 on their current computer or by buying a new one, a really good tool that Microsoft has is called ‘Windows Easy Transfer‘. This will automatically save your data and settings for all your programs and move them to the new one. Of course, if you need help, I’m always here!

Use your Login to stop viruses.

Helpful hint: When setting up a new home computer, create 2 logins: One with administrator rights so that you can install software, printers, etc and a second without these rights, to use as your normal login. This makes it much harder for viruses and spyware to infiltrate your computer since you’re not normally logged in with those rights.
